L' Agulhas Attractions

The Overberg ("over the mountain") was the original name given by Dutch settlers to the area lying east of the Hottentot's Holland Mountains, over Sir Lowry's Pass. It covers a large area of the Southern Cape as far as Swellendam and includes villages, farmlands, mountains, rivers and a coast warmed by the Indian Ocean. The farms vary from wine, fruit, wheat and canola, to stock like sheep and cattle. The Blue Crane is South Africa's national bird, and is often spotted along the roads.

Lovers of the outdoors have many activities to choose from- walking, hiking trails, horseriding, 4x4 trails, swimmimg, fishing, shark cage diving and whale watching.

The Overberg Coast is also known as the 'Whale Coast', because in winter the whales migrate down to the South Coast to mate and calve.

The region is an all year round destination, excellent for beach holidays.

The Overberg enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The height of summer is in January with average temperatures 15°C to 32°C. The middle of winter is June with average temperatures from 5°C to 22°C.

The Bontebok National Park, De Hoop Nature Reserve, and the De Mond Nature Reserve are just a few of the nature reserves well worth visiting. For the more daring, great white sharks and whales can be viewed in their environment from the local charter company. For the not-quite-so-daring, there's always angling, swimming, sailing, golf, and bowls.
